October 15, 2026
"Winery business has fallen off since Hoffman Companies' plans for the area did not materialize, traffic and business revenues are down." That summary of Councilman Joe Brazil's remarks is recorded in the St. Charles County Council journal for March 30, 2026. He made them during the vote on a new event building at Defiance Ridge Vineyards. Six months later, the venues along Highway 94 are partway through the second run of a fall festival they organized on their own. Defiance Oktoberfest 2026 is the clearest look so far at what Defiance's fall season becomes when local operators plan it themselves.
The event is new. In October 2025, St. Louis Magazine reported that several Defiance businesses had held their own Oktoberfest parties in earlier years, but this was the first time the area's wineries, breweries and distilleries had joined for one combined, month-long event. Mark Sutherland, founder of Stone Ledge Distillery, told the magazine that "it made absolute sense for us all to start working together and create this great experience that goes on for the entire month."
The heritage angle gives the festival a local basis. The Defiance Oktoberfest site notes that in 1850, more than half of St. Charles County was German. It also pitches Defiance to a regional audience as "just 20 minutes from Chesterfield, Lake St. Louis or Cottleville." For people who live closer than that, the event works best as a calendar spread across a few miles of the same road.
The festival's site lists eight places to celebrate this year. Addresses and descriptions below come from the event calendar and from St. Louis Magazine's 2025 profiles.
| Venue | Address | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Chandler Hill Vineyards | 596 Defiance Rd | Winery with Missouri varietals such as Vignoles, Chambourcin and Norton, plus a Perennial Artisan Ales tasting room |
| Defiance Ridge Vineyards | 2711 S. Missouri 94 | Winery opened in 2018, with a lake, gardens and a full restaurant menu |
| Circle 6 Watering Hole | 2998 S. Missouri 94 | Restaurant and bar run by local farmers Larry and Tiffany Winkler, with a meat market next door |
| Defiance Roadhouse | 2999 MO-94 | Live-music venue in a building dating to 1930 |
| Good News Brewing & Distilling | 2886 S. Missouri 94 | Brewery near the Katy Trail known for wood-fired sourdough pizza, open in Defiance since April 2019 |
| Saddles Social House | 100 Defiance Rd | Farm-to-fork bar, grill and market with a deck and fire pits |
| Stone Ledge Distillery & Churchill Cigar Room | 3006 S. Missouri 94 | Distillery making Ozark Highlands spirits, with its tasting room in an 1893 tavern building |
| Sugar Creek Winery & Distillery | 100 Boone Country | Hillside winery overlooking the Missouri River Valley |
The list has changed since last year. In 2025, Busch Family Brewing & Distilling at 4151 Benne Road was a participant, and it closed out the festival with a Schlachtfest on November 1. It isn't on the 2026 list. Defiance Roadhouse is on it for the first time.
The Roadhouse building has its own history on this stretch of Highway 94. Mid Rivers Newsmagazine reported on the 1930 structure in spring 2024. At the time, it was a Hoffmann property being leased-to-own by Marla Conn, who owned the original Wente's restaurant in Chesterfield. One building that was once part of a larger company's plans for the area is now on a calendar the local venues run themselves.
The changes say something about how the festival works. With no single host, the lineup is simply whichever venues choose to take part each year.
The council vote Brazil spoke at was about Defiance Ridge Vineyards. Bill 5467 amended the winery's conditional use permit to allow a new wedding and event building. The county's February planning packet described it as a 6,800-square-foot building with a 180-space parking lot.
The approved version was smaller in the ways neighbors notice most. According to the council journal, Community Development Director Mike Hurlbert said the plan had been amended in four ways:
Councilwoman York confirmed that outdoor music stops at 10 p.m., and the bill passed 6 to 1. York also said the council needs to discuss "a plan and a direction for future commercial uses in the wine country." We found no public update on whether construction has started.
Those conditions apply to the same venue hosting this month's largest Oktoberfest show. The venues are working to bring visitors back on their own, while the county is setting more specific limits on how big that growth gets and how late the music runs.
The festival's own site gives the 2026 dates as October 1 through November 2. Visit Defiance and a FOX 2 weekend roundup list it as ending November 1, so the first weekend of November is a safe way to think about the finish. Everything below is as listed by each venue or event page. Schedules change, so check with the venue before you drive out.
Midweek, October 14 and 15. Chandler Hill lists its Wednesday Dinner with Live Music on October 14, 5 to 9 p.m. Defiance Ridge follows with a Thursday Happy Hour & Dinner on October 15, 4 to 9 p.m., with food and drink specials and games.
Weekend of October 16 to 18. Defiance Roadhouse lists Steven Jones Music on Friday, 5 to 9 p.m., and Marciano Music on Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. Saturday morning, Chandler Hill lists a free Pilates and Prosecco at 10 a.m. Down Highway F, Frisella Nursery hosts Taste of Fall from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday has the most going on. Chandler Hill lists Puppy Yoga at 11 a.m. for $34, Good News has The Catfish Willie Duo, and the Roadhouse runs a Live Music Sunday with Fry Project and a poker run starting at 2 p.m.
Thursday, October 22. Good News lists its Thirsty Thursday 5K at 6 p.m.
Weekend of October 23 to 25. The Defiance Ridge calendar has the season's biggest outdoor show on Friday. Dogs of Society plays an Elton John tribute, with doors at 5 p.m., the show from 6:30 to 9, and fireworks at 9 if the weather allows. The winery follows with free music from Pink Houses USA on Saturday and Zero to Ninety on Sunday, both 1 to 4 p.m. Frisella Nursery lists Hocus Pocus in the Garden on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Chandler Hill lists Goat Yoga on Sunday at 10 a.m. for $42.
Halloween weekend, October 30 and 31. The Roadhouse lists All Hallows' Eve with The Front Porch Rockers on Friday at 5 p.m. On Saturday, Sugar Creek holds a Halloween event from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and asks guests to come in costume.
Sugar Creek lists live music from 1 to 5 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday through November 8, a week past the festival's last day.
The Katy Trail starts its winter schedule at the same time. The Missouri State Parks advisories page lists restroom closures and water shutoffs at some Katy Trail trailheads from November 1, 2026, through March 31, 2027. After November 1, if you ride or walk the trail to Good News, Sugar Creek or any other stop along it, plan on finding restrooms and water at the venues, not at the trailheads.
